Sometimes, bustling urban life makes us think of how to get away from it. Not to mention, to live in a healthy way nearly impossible considered the city single-handedly gave us plenty of activities—or ‘burden’ perhaps. On top of that, forming a positive habit to save the environment is quite challenging to the point it makes us wonder, “Is it possible to give our self a break and still be able to take care of our health and doing a good deed in this urban scene?” Yup! It’s still possible because you can find it all in Pasar Sehat.
Held once a month in C2O Library on the weekend, Pasar Sehat presents a variety of local tenants and artisans (read: sellers) offering good quality local products. It’s been around since 2015 initiated by Surabaya Sehat Community.
For more than four years, Pasar Sehat has become a pioneer in promoting a healthy lifestyle by giving a strict procedure in curating its tenants and zero waste movement, prohibiting plastic usage to entire products must be homemade before it is a thing. The goals of Pasar Sehat are not only to make people more aware of the importance of healthy lifestyle movement but also to explore Indonesia’s resource properly and develop the local potentials.
Food is a product that most offered in this event. The term ‘healthy’ here doesn’t just refer to nutritious food, but also food that is naturally processed without preservatives or other harmful chemicals. Not only that, all the food is prepared independently, which means that the artisan treats their food. Uniquely, mostly the food comes from artisan’s garden. To prove their commitment to local products, Ratu Fitri and Agni Oktarina as the initiator of Pasar Sehat encouraged their tenants to use local ingredients. “To call our market vegan or organic maybe isn’t fit for us, because what we introduce is more on the locals. We want to promote how local goods have good quality too. Even the tiniest detail like the ingredients, we encourage to use of local ingredients. For example, green dye, instead of using a green tea and how it can be replaced with pandanus (pandan),” said Ratu.
Even so, Pasar Sehat doesn’t center its tenant in food only “We are open for any products that are concern about the environment, natural processing, homemade, and also most important made from local. Maybe like a craft that made of plastic waste. Even cat adopter, we also open for it”, said Ratu. Continue Ratu statement, Agni gives the total of tenants who joined in Pasar Sehat, “Approximately there are 14-16 tenants that participated with 20-25 product variations.”
By implementing ‘strict’ regulations on tenants, Pasar Sehat is genuinely committed to presenting ‘goodness’ for both body and environment. What it means by strict, it doesn’t limit to kind of food, but how the artisan picks the ingredients to the process. Ratu and Agni also interviewed the potential artisan that followed up by inspection to guarantee its quality. Not only for tenants, but consumers are also expected to bring their tumbler, food containers, and shopping bag—not the plastic one if they want to buy there. Pasar Sehat also emphasizes the interaction between artisans and consumers bring back the communication in the traditional market between producer and consumer. The aim is to make consumers more familiar with the products they buy through the information that the artisans deliver directly. Building a trust rather than just providing the products to consumers is what makes Pasar Sehat more interesting.
Therefore, in Pasar Sehat, there’s no online delivery service, only direct interaction. Moreover, there is a talk show discussion tips or knowledge on a healthy lifestyle that can be enjoyed by anyone. With well-curated products, ethical impacts execution, and engaging interaction, Pasar Sehat surely able to put goodness and fun in the same sentence.
