Alvinska (@alvinska) marked the journey through her academic background in Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Through her years in college, she ended up attained many lessons, particularly in crafting and arts related to textile major later that turned out to be helpful in establishing Alvs Studio shortly after graduating. It’s an exploration studio for natural materials that turn into creative and functional objects from stationery to decorations made of natural fibers. As she developed her passion and talents, Alvinska discovered something more when she joined one of the BEKRAF’s programs, IKKON where she was directly involved in interacting, exploring and collaborating with creative workers in Indonesian regions. “I happen to be placed in West Sumatra, specifically in Sawahlunto which had been known as a coal-producing city,” explained Alvinska.

Seeing its enormous potential, Alvinska initiates to develop it as a creative project—currently known as LEGAM (@legam.id). Define LEGAM as sustainable jewelry, Alvinska ensure that those potential crafted in right hands. She began the interview by telling us the story behind it. “After researching the place, I found that most of Sawahlunto’s residents are coal craftsman. Unfortunately, a result of massive layoffs from the coal company affected the workers to find another job and on the other side craftsmen is their skill. Although the craftwork is marvelous, the sources and lack of support from social services is limited, so the craftsmen were unable to market their work. Therefore, I thought to give a shot by giving the craftsmen opportunity through LEGAM,” said Alvinska while remembering her trip first in Sawahlunto.

When it comes to business, we tend to think about how to gain profit as much as possible. However, as time goes by, profit doesn’t seem to be the only thing to be pursued. Businessman shifting its focus to social responsibility as the business’s main core. They thoughtfully empathize with social issues and how to help those in need—varies from disability to underprivileged community. Not to mention, creative industry also takes part as it brings up many ‘sociopreneur’—refers to an entrepreneur that carries on social responsibility in its business rather than obtain profits contribute to making it rise to trend. And if you are looking for promising socioprenuer, Alvinska Octaviana, the founder of Alvs Studio (@alvs.studio) and LEGAM is the one that you need to look up to.

Alvinska is also single-handedly directing the craftsmen in Sawahlunto, especially when a new design is about to launch where she needs to take a round trip from Bandung to West Sumatra. Rather than thinking how tiring it might be, Alvinska passionately sharing the memorable experience where she is living with the craftsmen. “When I was working there, I practically live with them and their family as well as follow their culture and habits. I still remember that the craftsmen would play with their chickens or go to the rice fields, and I had fun joined them as well” Alvinska recalled it with her thick Sundanese accents in a witty voice.

Being part of the lives of local craftsmen made Alvinska realize how important and possible it is to work while giving more for others. She told about her consideration towards the society on creative industry scene “Sometimes there are still some people who didn’t see thoughtfully at the products as a reflection of value and effort from the artisans. There are still many who’s only sees how its appearance and visual, but didn’t notice the stories.” So, at the end of the discussion, she earnestly wishes that people be more aware and starts buy the local brand as an appreciation towards local artists, hoping the young generations could take a part too. She believes that giving value the journey and process behind every local product can be the beginning to embrace the locals. As much as we touched by her remarks, Alvinska is indeed bound to steal hearts to many as she is always giving back to the society.
